Obama’s “No Fly” List for FedEx and UPS

http://fff.org

By Wendy McElroy March 22, 2013

The Obama administration is notorious for crony capitalism, through which big businesses reap huge riches by virtue of their cozy association with government. Big oil, big car companies, big agrobusinesses, big banks, and big drug corporations are among the legally privileged cronies who are profiting at the expense of nonprivileged competitors and of customers who pay higher prices.

Now the Department of Justice (DOJ) is trying to institute the shipping version of a “no fly” list on behalf of the big pharmaceutical companies and in the name of the war on drugs. The DOJ wants America’s two largest courier/delivery services to open and report on the shipments from online pharmacies, allegedly to staunch the flow of illegal pharmaceuticals. Here’s the catch: the DOJ wants packages opened even when there is no reason to suspect illegal contents.

FedEx spokesman Patrick Fitzgerald explained, “sealed packages … are being sent by, as far as we can tell, licensed pharmacies. These are medicines with legal prescriptions written by licensed physicians.” Fitzgerald added, “We are a transportation company that picks up and delivers close to 10 million packages every day. They are sealed packages, so we have no way of knowing specifically what’s inside and we have no interest in violating the privacy rights of our customers.”

The courier companies have a long tradition of refusing service to shippers who are identified as criminal suspects by law enforcement. But the DOJ refuses to provide a list of what are called “rogue pharmacies” — that is, online pharmacies functioning without a license. Instead, the DOJ is broadly targeting shipments of online pharmacies that may be entirely legal. This is similar to giving airlines a “no fly” list that does not bar individuals but instead names an entire industry.

This step was foreshadowed by a $500 million settlement between Google and the DOJ in 2011. The company paid out to resolve a case in which it was accused of profiting from the paid ads of rogue pharmacies. At that time, RxRights — “a coalition concerned about the high cost of U.S. pharmaceuticals” — expressed concern about “a blanket backlash against all online pharmacies.” RxRights stated, “Preventing all safe and legitimate Canadian and International pharmacies from advertising online because of the illegal activities of some rogue pharmacies is simply unfair.” RxRights added, “Also, we’re very concerned about the next logical step.”

A “logical” step toward closing down online pharmacies seems to be already underway. Criminal charges have been threatened against both FedEx and UPS if they refuse to cooperate with DOJ demands, on the grounds that they are “aiding and abetting online pharmacies that illegally ship prescription drugs.” Fitzgerald stated, “What is unusual and really disturbing is it became clear to us along the way that FedEx was being targeted for some level [of] criminal activity as it relates to these medicines that are being shipped from pharmacies, and we find it to be completely absurd because it’s really not our role.”

The why of it economically

Online and foreign pharmacies are popular sources of legal pharmaceuticals because they usually offer low prices and high convenience. This competition constitutes a widening crack in the pharmaceutical monopoly that big drug companies would like to enjoy in the United States.

The financial stakes are massive. On September 5, 2012, a New York Daily News headline announced, “Arizona Woman Feeling the Pain from a $83,046 Bill for Anti-Venom Drug after Seeking Medical Treatment for Scorpion Sting.” The subtitle explained, “Marcie Edmonds was stung in Phoenix and needed two doses of the anti-venom Anascorp.” Because the drug is derived from readily available material, there seems to be no free-market reason for it being extraordinarily expensive. ABC News reported, “The drug is made from horse antibodies, and comes from Mexico, where it costs about $100 per dose, according to Kaiser Health News.” Edmonds would have saved $39,552 a dose if she had ordered the drug from a licensed Mexican pharmacy and had some on hand.

No one keeps the antidote for scorpion venom on hand. And Edmonds’s story may be an extreme one. But many people shop online for drugs for chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease; many people save a healthy amount of money by doing so. Every time someone in America frequents an online source, big conventional pharmaceuticals lose a customer.

The why of it politically

When FedEx attempted to get a list of pharmacies suspected of illegal activities in order to refuse their packages, the DOJ’s response was telling. The DOJ refused because providing a list could violate the due-process rights of businesses named and thus open the DOJ to lawsuits. An interesting message is implicit in this refusal. If the government searches private packages without probable cause, then it is violating the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution. Specifically, it would violate the Fourth Amendment guarantee that “the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated.”

But the policies of a private company are not similarly restrained. The federal government uses complicit airlines as a way to sidestep the unconstitutionality of random searches at airports; if someone objects to the airline’s policy of screening customers, then he can forgo air travel. Equally, if a courier’s policy is to search packages, then a customer who objects could forgo their service. (It is not clear that customers of FedEx or UPS would be notified of the possibility of such a search in advance.) As Fitzgerald observed, “the government is assigning a role” to “us as law enforcement.”

Conclusion

UPS appears to be negotiating a settlement with the DOJ. In a November 1, 2012, filing on its quarterly earnings, UPS first disclosed the DOJ investigation: “We have received requests for information from the DOJ in the Northern District of California in connection with a criminal investigation relating to the transportation of packages for online pharmacies that may have shipped pharmaceuticals in violation of federal law.” The Seattle Times (Nov. 15, 2012) reported that UPS was cooperating with the investigation and was “exploring the possibility of resolving this matter.”

By contrast, FedEx has declared that “settlement is not an option for us when there’s no illegal activity on our part.”

Hopefully, the line FedEx has drawn is in cement, not sand. If the DOJ can order couriers to report the contents of any pharmaceutical shipment to ensure they do not contain illegal drugs, then it is not merely drug customers who will suffer. How long will it be before the DOJ orders the opening of financial material to fight money laundering? The Department of Justice is attacking the very concept of private mail in America.

Psalm 91    King James Version

1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

9 Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

Stunning Corn Comparison: GMO versus NON GMO

www.momsacrossamerica.com

Posted by Zen Honeycutt on March 15, 2013

The claims that “There is no difference between GMO corn and NON Gmo corn” are false. Yesterday while on a playdate at the lake, Vince from De Dell Seed Company, Canada’s only NON GMO corn seed company called me to support the march and Americans finding out about GMOs. He emailed me this stunning report, clearly showing the nutritional value difference between GMO corn and NON GMO corn. I was floored. And at the same time, not totally surprised because Glyphosate draws out the vital nutrients of living things and GMO corn is covered with it.

The important thing to note in these deficiencies is that these are exactly the deficiencies in a human being that lead to susceptibility to sickness, disorders and cancer.  People who have osteoporosis are low in calcium and magnesium, people who have cancer are low in maganese. The list goes on and on.

GMO Corn has 14 ppm of Calcium and NON GMO corn has 6130 ppm. 437 X more.

GMO corn has 2 ppm of Magnesium and NON GMO corn has 113ppm. 56 X more.

GMO corn has 2 ppm of Manganese and NON GMO corn has 14ppm. 7X more.

Look at the levels of Formaldehyde and Glyphosate IN the corn! The EPA standards for Glyphosate in water in America is .7ppm. In Europe it is .2 ppm. Tests showed organ damage to animals at .1ppm of Glyphosate in water. This corn has 13 ppm!

In another study taht Dr. Huber reported,  .97 ppm of formeldehyde showed to be toxic in ingestion to animals. This corn has 200X that! That is why the animals , given a choice will not eat it at all, they can smell the formeldehyde!

Please share this report with your legislature, farmers, news editors, school district food services and Moms.

We will no longer be feeding our children food with nutritional deficiencies,  foreign proteins, food sprayed with Glyphosate, or injected with pesticides. Nor will we be fed their lies of safety!

THANK YOU De Dell sharing this report and supporting the Americas in GMO labeling and in going GMO Free!

Religious Groups Celebrate Day to Thank Abortion Doctors

juicyecumenism.com

Posted by Institute on Religion and Democracy in News 18 March 2013

By John Lomperis (@JohnLomperis)

In case you missed it, March 10 was National Abortion Provider Appreciation Day.

Yes, a special day to celebrate the work done by our friendly neighborhood abortionists.

The Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (RCRC), which enjoys official, unqualified endorsements from a collection of liberal Protestant, Jewish, Unitarian Universalist, and atheist/humanist groups, marked the holiday by e-mailing supporters a statement entitled “The Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice Thanks and Blesses Abortion Providers.”

Most self-identified “pro-choicers” are driven by their God-given consciences to say that they are not comfortable with abortion, that they do not like abortion, and/or that they would support efforts to make abortions “rare.”

But such squeamishness is not for RCRC. According to this church-endorsed, atheist-funded interfaith group, religious leaders should celebrate the “holy work” (which has claimed the lives of over 55 million Americans since 1973), by thanking, blessing, and offering prayers of gratitude for the work of “abortion providers around the world.” After all, performing abortions is driven by “equal parts compassion and courage,” as well as, for many providers, “a deep religious faith,” RCRC assures us.

RCRC’s endorsers include four oldline Protestant denominations: the United Methodist Church, the Presbyterian Church (USA), the Episcopal Church, and the United Church of Christ. While many members of each denomination have protested this affiliation, RCRC enjoys strong support from the liberal factions and denominational elites in all four.

Liberals within the United Methodist Church (my own denomination) openly celebrate how their Macchiavellian tactics prevented a proposal to sever the UMC’s ties with RCRC from ever coming to a vote at denomination’s 2012 General Conference. Observers on both sides believe that this proposal would have passed if delegates had not been forcibly prevented from voting on it, even despite the way in which the United Methodist bishops (with a couple of notable exceptions) have chosen to abdicate their responsibility of moral leadership.

The RCRC e-mail also promotes a video featuring an abortionist and RCRC board member, Dr. Willie Parker, accepting RCRC’s inaugural “Moody-Patterson Award for Leadership in Reproductive Justice.”  Throughout his speech, succinct propaganda from RCRC appears on the screen.

Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice email on abortion

As is typical for defenders of all abortions, there is disproportionate attention given to rare “hard cases” which account for only a tiny percentage of American abortions.

But the award recipient makes clear that his abortion business also includes many cases of simply “unplanned or unwanted pregnancies.” He defends his work by asking such questions as “Should the relatively innocent college girl who underestimates the power of alcohol and becomes pregnant during a casual date be punished to the degree of being forced to give up her college education and social standing, bringing untold hardships to her family?” or if a married woman who already had as many children as she wanted should “be punished” for contraceptive failure when raising an additional child would be financially challenging.

Meanwhile, creative, non-violent solutions to such challenging circumstances (including but not limited to adoption) are treated as unworthy of even a moment of consideration.

For the large portion of the human population whose conception was not planned, RCRC’s implied message seems clear: the value of your life is inherently lower than that of others. In fact, your being allowed to live is defined primarily as a “punishment” and a source of “untold hardships” for your family.

The statement from the “religious” front group gushingly claims that in the video, Parker “eloquently explained why providing abortion care is a part of his own spiritual life.” However, his speech actually makes no reference to God, scripture, or even to his personally adhering to any religion. The most religious part of his speech is when Parker approvingly quotes a statement from the Clergy Consultative Service praising abortionists for “living by the highest standards of religion and of the Hippocratic Oath” and then Parker goes on to recall “revering” that group’s founder, the late Rev. Howard Moody, a partial namesake of the award.  (RCRC’s rather broad use of the term “religion” would hardly exclude Ancient Near Eastern traditions mentioned in the Old Testament which practiced child sacrifice.) The Service was a forerunner to RCRC which helped mothers get abortions before it was decriminalized throughout the United States.

The citation of the Hippocratic Oath is rather odd, given how abortion is explicitly rejected in the classical version of that oath for doctors of Western medicine.

RCRC’s on-screen text dishonestly claims that “In the years before Roe v. Wade was decided [in 1973], it’s estimated that tens of thousands of women died each year due to unsafe abortions….” Abortion-defending activists have long been exposed for blatantly lying in inflating such statistics, but few put their exaggerations as high as RCRC’s asserted 20,000 – 100,000 maternal deaths every year.

The premature death of anyone is always tragic. But the truth is that there were actually only 39 maternal deaths from illegal abortions reported to the Center for Disease Control in 1972, less than the deaths from legal abortions.  Meanwhile, RCRC appears unconcerned over the many documented mothers who have died from legal abortions since 1973.

As an apparently deliberate rhetorical strategy, the speech and RCRC text repeatedly connect abortion to the words “compassion” and “care,” even framing the procedure itself as “abortion care.” In fact, Parker frames his work as so driven by compassion that his retort to questions about his comfort with personally performing abortions is that he is “uncomfortable at the number of abortions [he] failed to provide for the first 12 years of [his] practice.” Meanwhile, RCRC’s on-screen text also notes common “reproductive rights” talking points lamenting how the performance of abortion is not more widespread throughout the country.

Yet for all the talk of compassion and care, this abortion-appreciation presentation includes no hint of acknowledgement that abortions involve another human being besides the woman and the abortionist, let alone acknowledgement of the scars abortion leaves on surviving mothers, fathers, and siblings.

Two objective scientific facts are (1) that unborn children are indeed human and (2) that they are fundamentally distinct beings from their mothers, genetically and otherwise.  The question is if we will extend compassionate care to them.

But in RCRC’s dictionary, “compassion” and “care” are redefined to mean mercilessly drowning another human being in poison or cutting him to pieces, and taking great pains to avoid acknowledging he ever existed.

The 2003 book, Holy Abortion? A Theological Critique of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, carefully documents how the extremism of RCRC directly conflicts with the more nuanced (although sadly not strongly pro-life) positions of its four affiliated Protestant denominations. Since then, the Presbyterian Church (USA) has strengthened its opposition to late-term abortions while the United Methodist Church has inched in a more pro-life direction in several key incremental steps.

These denominations include countless faithful Christians who worship a God Who created each person in His own image, Who “fearfully and wonderfully” “knit [each person] together in [his or her] mother’s womb” (Psalm 139:13-14), and Who personally became incarnate in the womb of a teenage girl whose own “social standing” and financial security were challenged by this unexpected (for Mary) pregnancy. They follow a Lord Whose welcoming of children, expanding the boundaries of “my neighbor,” and stressing the importance of our treatment of “the least of these” are certainly relevant to our treatment of naked, defenseless children whose lives are threatened.

These Christians’ faith is framed by a Bible whose core values such as self-sacrifice (in contrast to sacrificing the lives of others) could hardly be more opposed to RCRC’s worldview of treating your own financial stability, education, and “social standing” as not just valuable, but absolute idols to be defended at any cost, even the death of other human beings created in God’s own image. They reject RCRC’s insistence that one must choose between loving a mother or loving her child, recognizing and demonstrating that the love of God extends to all, including unexpectedly pregnant mothers, their unplanned children, and post-abortive women.

Yet the vast majority of members of these denominations are utterly unaware of the extremism or even existence of this “religious” group which claims to speak for them. Since such ignorance is crucial in dulling momentum for denominations revisiting their affiliations, RCRC likes to keep things this way.

[Update 2:04 PM EST: We have added the original RCRC email in question to the post. It was not previously included.]

Socialists ready to make power grab of world citizens’ money
What’s happening in Cyprus should send a chill over the entire world

canadafreepress.com

By Judi McLeod    Sunday, March 17, 2013

Get your money out of the banks. Due to an “emergency deal reached today in Brussels”,  a one-time 9.9% tax is to be levied on Cypriot bank deposits of more than 100,000 euros effective Tuesday, March 19.

Virtually overnight and with no warning of any kind,  the emergency tax deal was imposed on the people of Cyprus without vote or debate.  People ran to ATM machines today only to discover that the taxed amount of their cash had already been frozen.

Monday in Cyprus is a national holiday, the first day of Greek Orthodox Easter.

Nor is this emergency only inflicted upon the so-called rich as even deposits under 100,000 euros will now be taxed at 6.7%.

“If it can happen in Cyprus, it can happen anywhere,” worried British correspondent Anna Grayson told Canada Free Press (CFP) in an overseas telephone call today.

“Is this why the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has purchased millions of hollow point bullets, is this why rumors of an underground bunker being built for Obama are circulating?”

The bottom line of the Cyprus story is that politicians are forcing a new 10 billion euro bailout—to be paid directly from the bank accounts of ordinary people.

The people of Cyprus, most of whom never saw this coming,  never had a chance.  Without social media they would not have known their accounts were frozen as of today.

People poured into the streets, making a run on ATM machines.  A crowd of around 150 protesters massed in front of the presidential palace late in the afternoon at the beginning of the three-day religious holiday on the island.

Cyprus is the fifth country to seek a bailout following Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain but the terms of the deal are a radical departure from previous schemes.

No one will escape the bailout deal which will apply to everyone from pensions to Russian oligarchs, who are alleged to have billions stashed away in what officials claim is a bloated Cypriot banking sector. (Sky News, March 16, 2013).)

The blueprint laid by cunning EU Socialist finance ministers comes at a time when the USA is being led by a Socialist president.

This is how the EU robbed the people of Cyprus:

Banks first cooperated with the EU by sealing off the amount of the proposed levy—a 6.75 percent tax on deposits under €100,000 and 9.9 percent on those above —making it impossible for depositors to access their full amount.  The only means bank customers have left is the ability to draw from the rest of their funds via ATM machines this weekend. Many depositors made their way to the machines on Saturday to drain their accounts.  But the few banks that opened on Saturdays did so only briefly, and no international transfers will be able to go through until Tuesday, with Monday being the holiday. Cyprus’ Parliament is expected to meet Sunday to pass the required legislation., or after the deed was done. The deal also needs the approval of several eurozone parliaments; at the time of writing it was unclear how fast they can act and what will happen to bank deposits in the meantime.

What’s happening in Cyprus should send a chill over the entire world.

Politicians working with complicit big banks need no rule of law; no parliament debates to close in on the bank accounts of average people.

Get your money out of the banks wherever you are, and do it as soon as possible.

World Jewish Congress urges Greece to act against ‘new Nazis’ Golden Dawn

sofiaglobe.com

Posted Mar 18 2013 by The Sofia Globe staff in Bulgaria, CEE, EU, News

World Jewish Congress leaders sent a strong message of solidarity to the Jewish community of Greece as they gathered in Thessaloniki on March 17 2013 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the roundup and deportation of the Jews from this northern Greek city to the Nazi death camps, the European Jewish Press reports.

In presence of Greek prime minister Antonis Samaras and Holocaust survivors, WJC President Ronald S. Lauder urged Greece to take decisive action against the growing neo-Nazi movement Golden Dawn which he called “the new Nazis” and “a threat to democracy.”

On this occasion, Samaras became the first sitting Greek prime minister of the past 100 years to visit a synagogue, the Monastiriotes synagogue of Thessaloniki, as he pledged that his government would do everything to rein in the extremists.

The Greek government would enact legislation that will be “completely intolerant to violence and racism,” he said, noting that with neo-Nazi parties on the rise again in Europe, governments had to “be very careful not to let them gain ground as they did in the 1930s.”

The World Jewish Congress called on Greece to “consider banning political parties, such as the Golden Dawn movement, which pose a serious danger to liberal democracy”. It also called on the European Union to “ensure that political movements that actively espouse a platform of discrimination of ethnic or religious minorities, in contravention of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, are dealt with in a coordinated manner in all EU member states that law enforcement authorities receive all necessary support for the protection of citizens against such crimes.”

Bulgaria held ceremonies last week commemorating the 70th anniversary of the prevention of the deportation of Bulgarian Jews to Nazi Holocaust death camps and honouring the memory of the victims from Northern Greece and Yugoslavia.

Bulgaria’s neighbour Macedonia held commemoration ceremonies of its own last week, marking the 70thanniversary of the deportation of about 7000 Jews from its territory to the Nazi death camps.

At ceremonies across the country organised by the Macedonian Jewish community the country remembered the deportations begun in March 1943 which continued over a two-month period.

In all, about 98 per cent of the wartime Jewish population of today’s Macedonia of about 7000 were deported to the Nazi death camps.

Then people will say, “Surely the righteous still are rewarded; surely there is a God who judges the earth.”

David Ranta, Man Freed After 23 Years In Prison, Suffers Heart Attack On Second Day Of Release

NEW YORK — A New York City man whose murder conviction was overturned after 23 years in prison has suffered a heart attack on his second day of freedom.

David Ranta’s lawyer tells The New York Times (http://nyti.ms/102uUVo) the former inmate had a serious heart attack Friday night and is being treated at a New York hospital.

Ranta walked out of jail Thursday after a judge threw out his conviction in the 1990 killing of a Brooklyn rabbi.

Brooklyn prosecutors had recently concluded Ranta’s prosecution in the death of Rabbi Chaskel Werzberger was fatally flawed.

Werzberger was killed by a bandit fleeing a botched robbery. One witness said a police lineup that helped convict Ranta had been rigged.

Ranta is 58. He told reporters Thursday that his new freedom was emotionally overwhelming.
